BOOK REVIEW: Percy Jackson And The Last Olympian

Dear cousin Eli,

I just read Percy Jackson And The Last Olympian. It’s about a seventeen year old child named Percy Jackson. He is trying to save the world by defeating an evil titan named Krones. There is a whole series! There are five books, The Lightning Thief, The Sea Of Monsters, The Titans Curse, The Battle Of The Labyrinth, (which I think is the best), and finally The Last Olympian.

When I read, I like to pretend that I’m in the book because it makes reading so much more fun. I read for about one hour a day. I also read fluently and with a lot of expression so it makes everything you’re reading exciting!

How long do you like to read? What do you like to do when you read? Do you like to pretend you’re in the book, too? Reading is my favorite subject. How about you? I can’t wait to hear from you.

From, Diego

BOOK REVIEW: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling

I am recommending Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling. It is about two twelve year old boys named Albus Potter and Scorpios Malfoy. They try to save Cedric Diggory by using a time turner and going back into the past so he doesn’t get killed by Voldemort. On their first attempt they fail. On their second attempt they accidentally go to one of the worst times in the past.

I like the book because I like fantasy. Another reason I like the book is that the book makes you feel a lot of different emotions like fear, nervousness, exhilaration, anger, relief, and probably many more. For example, I felt relieved when Albus and Scorpios get saved by Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Draco.

Another example, is when I felt nervous when Albus went into Slytherin house. I predicted that everyone would be talking about a Potter being in Slytherin because the famous Harry Potter, Albus’ dad, was in Gryffindor. I hope you read it and love it as much as I do.

When did the event take place?

They built the sleep room on April 4, 2016.

Is this news local Marin, state California, national in the United States or international outside the United States?

This article is outside the United States.

Where did it take place?

This took place in Paris. Paris is in France.

Who is this story about?

This story is about Fred Buyle because he designed the room and he gives the winners a tour of the aquarium.

What happened?

Airbnb helped build a circular sleep room in water so you get a 360 view of the sharks. Some people think the glass is going to break but it won’t because they tested it in the Mediterranean Sea. Now there is a sleep place under water 33 feet deep in the shark tank. There are 35 sharks in the tank. It is only open on April 11,12, and 13. After the three nights they turn it into a lab to see what sharks do.

Why did it happen?

It happened so people can have experience with sleeping with sharks. It also happened so you can get a close look at sharks.

How does it happen?

People enter a raffle to win the room with sharks. Then they have to say why they should spend the night with sharks. The winner goes on a tour with Fred Buyle to see the aquarium and where they will be sleeping. Then the room lowers down 33 feet into the shark tank. You are forbidden to take pictures in the dark because sharks are sensitive to light.

My opinion

I think it is a little dangerous and fun because having sharks around is pretty cool but sharks are also agressive. It is a little dangerous because the glass might break and the sharks might attack or the water will fill up the tank and drown you. Even with this danger of “the sleepover with sharks idea, the excitement of learning about sharks in their natural habitat is worth while taking the risk.”

When did the event take place?

Outhouse Racing took place on Jan.16 2016.

Shovel Racing took place on Feb.6 2016.

Is this news local Marin, state California, national in the United States or international outside the United States?

This is outside California.

Where did the event take place?

The event took place in Minnesota.

Who is this story about?

This article is not about a person.

Why did this happen?

It happened so it can make winter sports more exciting.

What happened?

Most people have normal winter sports like skiing, sledding, ice-skating, and snowboarding and those sports provide enough excitement. The people that control the ice and snow want to take better use of the abandoned ice and snow and do different sports with them. In January through March the weather in Minnesota gets down to about -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Instead of sleeping, the people of Minnesota go out into the snow and play sports.

How it does happen?

Ice Car Racing

One sport is called ice car racing. When you race you are racing for fun. The cars have wheels with spikes on them so the car won’t slip in the snow. This sport is fun and dangerous. The races start around noon. The snow is 18 inches thick or more! First, you take a few warm up laps. When it’s time the person with the flag would wave the flag and the race would begin.

There could only be ten cars in one race. The first three cars that cross the finish line on the regular lap get to go to the finals. In the finals, you do fifteen laps on the street that’s covered in snow. This sport can be in New York, Alaska, and France. Some cars can go up to 100 miles an hour! There have been some accidents. You are allowed to have L.E.D. (light emitting diode) lights on your car. They use LED lights because the brighter lights reflect the light on the snow and distracts the driver.  For fans this sport provides more excitement.

Outhouse Racing

Outhouse racing is usually on the third Saturday. Outhouse racing is when you build a small house with three sides. You bring your small house to the competition and the judges will put the small house on skies. The person that built the house would hop inside and when the race starts people will race in the house that they built and race across the snow packed roads.

There is a funny rule that a toilet and toilet paper have to be inside the outhouse. There are different races for seniors, adults, teens, and kids. There can also be an obstacle course as a bonus. This sport took place in Washington state on January 16, 2016.

Shovel Racing

Shovel racing is when you are riding on a shovel through the snow. It’s dangerous and fun. They do it so it can be fun shoveling snow. It is a real race at the same time! The competition took place on February 6, 2016. Anyone at any age can compete. There are no teams, everyone is on their own. You have to wear a helmet.

Amazon stores are everywhere and the stores have the drones.

Who is this story about?

This article is not about a person.

What happened?

Amazon created a drone because it’s faster for the packages to arrive. It takes 30 minutes or less. It is larger than the last drone they used. It’s blue, orange, and white because that is the color of amazon. It can travel up to 15 miles or less. It can travel as fast as 55 miles per hour. It has a rear propeller so it can fly like a real airplane which is straight. It can fly almost as high as a real helicopter. But U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has not approved their drone yet. It is still illegal. My question is, why are they using the drone when the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has not approved it yet?

When did the event take place?

On November 30th 2015 Amazon released a video of the drone being used.

How does it happen?

The drone lowers the package to the ground and drops it out of the compartment. To avoid the traffic in the air it flies at a safe height which is 400 feet or lower. The advanced sensors make sure that it can avoid obstacles in the air, taking off, and landing so it won’t break.

Unlike the last drone, it doesn’t drop the package from the sky. The customer gets to choose where the drone drops it off. The drone comes close to the ground and puts the package where the mark is.

The landing spot must be clear. It can’t fall in the wrong hands because the drone is programed to tell the customer the exact time their package will arrive. Amazon is still working on a family of drones. It is also built to survive all kinds of weather.

Why did it happen?

Amazon needed something to deliver the packages faster because customers were waiting for their packages to arrive.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

First Visit – Private Tour

When I got out of the car I was surprised! I saw a picture of a GIGANTIC dog on the door. I was at the guide dogs for the blind in San Rafael with Lucy, her mom my mom and me. I walked in, I was startled I saw about 300 dogs in the room and only a few of them were barking I thought, this is quiet. Then suddenly a lady walked in the room, her nametag read, Lauren.

1_IMG_4704 1_IMG_4721 1_IMG_4727 1_IMG_4755

A little later we walked into her office. I asked some of my questions I wanted to know. Then we set off toward some guide dogs. We walked in, it was really quiet. I pet one of the dogs, their fur was soft. I saw a bone on the floor then I asked if I could give it to one of them she said yes so I looked around to find a dog that didn’t have a bone.

There was a lot of dogs that had a bone then I finally found one without a bone. I dropped it in. Boy that dog was jumping like crazy when I gave her the bone. Then Ms. Lauren showed us a chart of poop and my mom freaked out. Then we went out to get our stuff in her office and we left and headed home. That was fun, I thought.

Second Visit – Graduation Day

I was waiting at the door of the Guide Dog Center. Then suddenly a lady walks up, and she said, “I will be your tour guide for today.” She first took us to the Administration building. Then she took us over to the pond in the middle of the campus. Then she told us that when blind people hear the sound of the pond it means that they are close to the kennels. We went inside to see the kennels. A kennel is a place where the dogs are kept.

Then after that we went out of the kennel place and we went into the dog kitchen and there was a live picture of a dog with their pups. Then we went out and people asked questions. I learned that a person can keep a guide dog for more than 7 years.

And then we went to the graduation of the guide dogs which was held in the Administration building. The people that raised the dogs were crying because they bonded together and it’s so easy to bond with a dog and they were sad and happy because the dogs were leaving. They were happy because they were going to help blind people, they were sad because the dog was leaving.

The second person was crying, and she was crying so hard that she couldn’t even talk. Then four more others did their graduation and it was done and at the end I got a cookie. And we left. The graduation was about guide dogs going to a blind person.

Puppies can walk right when they are born. They are small and they are so cute. This puppy program is in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Texas, and Washington.

What guide dogs do:
They help blind people walk, cross the street, keep her / him safe and many more.

Who started it:
Don Donaldson and Lois Merrihew who are training dogs in the picture below.LOIS_AND_DON

When it started it:
It started in 1942 in Los Gatos then Lois Merrihew and Don Donaldson moved Guide Dogs to San Rafael in 1947.

Why they started it:
They started it because blind people couldn’t do a lot of things independently.

What guide dogs eat:
Guide dogs eat bait, fruit, meat and other stuff but do not give them chocolate.

How old guide dogs can get:
Guide dogs can get as old as 15 years old.

How long do guide dogs work:
Guide dogs work for 6-7 years.

How many guide dogs trained each year:
There are about 800 dogs trained each year.

What the stages are for becoming a Guide Dog:

Guide Dog Stages

Where they find the dogs:
The first guide dog was named Blondie and she had puppies and her puppies had puppies and they kept having puppies and many of them became guide dogs.

What the guide dog volunteers do:
Some feed, some train, some take care of the puppies, and some work at night.

Where guide dog locations are:
I only know of two, one is in San Rafael, California and one is in Boring, Oregon.

Does every dog become a guide dog?
Dogs that don’t become a guide dog are called career change. I learned that a blind person can stay with their dog for more than seven years. I also learned that it can be hard to leave a guide dog that you have trained.

This site looked amazing and interesting. These are pictures of the site:

This is special because blind people wouldn’t know what to do without guide dogs.

Because it is easy to make friends with dogs. And because the blind people need someone to be their eyes. And because the blind person really needs someone to trust.

“PASSING BY” by Lois Merrihew (written in 1939)

I saw a man and a dog pass by

And the dog was his master’s seeing eye.

The sight, to my eye was a joyous feast

And I pondered the worth of the noble beast.

What better reason has one to live

Than have a service that he can give?

To be of help on life’s rough road

And help another to carry his load?

I envied the dog with the seeing eye

As he led his master so proudly by,

Ever alert to his master’s care

And proud of the cross he had to bear.

No thought of greed, no selfish whim,

No motive mean to hamper him.

Proud of the privilege to serve and be

The eyes for his master who cannot see.

Giving his life with a joyous heart

Willing and eager to do his part.

No wonder I was thrilled as they passed me by

That man and his dog with the seeing eye.

Is this news local Marin, state California, national in the United States or international outside the United States?

This scene takes place in our Solar System.

Who is this story about?

This article is about water spotted on Mars.

What happened?

In 2008 they found frozen water and ice on Mars, in 2015 they found liquid water. There was salt water spotted on Mars. They think it was melted ice or sand or rocks with water in it. In 2008 they discovered ice on Mars.

The water streams were about 12 to 15 feet. Water is a sign of life and health. In 2008 NASA found ice on Mars. They have seen water on Mars before. NASA is trying to figure out what caused the water. Rovers are finding humidity in the air.

It seem that water is flowing on the surface of Mars mostly in the summer time.

In the 2030s NASA is going to try to send astronauts to Mars so NASA can see if humans can live on Mars.  A clue for life is if they collect rocks and soil and bring it back to earth so scientists can look at them closely and break it apart to see if water is inside.

When did the event take place?

They confirmed water in 2008 but they continue to find water.

How did it happen? Why did it happen?

It either happened because of melted ice or sand and rocks with water in them.

My Trip to the A’S Game

This past summer I went to the A’s game with my dad. We gave the man our bags and it went it into some kind of belt. Then we gave him our tickets. Then we were in the stadium. We got A’s jerseys for free! We looked at our seat number. We found our seats. When we were waiting for the game to start there was some entertainment on the baseball field! We saw a fake elephant in a car rolling around the stadium. It rolled around twice! Then the game started! The A’s were in the field first. They were playing the Tampa bay rays. The rays guy hit the ball in the outfield Sam Fuld caught it! They got two more outs. Then the inning was over.

My dad got me a hot dog! In the 9th inning, which is the last inning it was tied. The A’s were up to bat!  Then Stephen Vogt hit a home run! The A’s had won! Then we left the stadium.
